After announcing the launch of AG1 through our recent press release, we received strong interest from founders, creators, and industry partners. Many of the conversations that followed revealed clear user needs and market gaps—areas where we believe ambitious founders can build transformative companies.
AG1 is Japan’s first residency program designed for globally ambitious AI founders. We believe the next generation of iconic companies will emerge where AI meets creativity, emotion, and culture. Japan’s unique content ecosystem—anime, gaming, music, and fandom—offers fertile ground to experiment, launch, and scale.
We want to share some of the themes that excite us most today. These nine are not the only directions we support—we welcome founders with ideas far beyond this list. Think of them as inspiration, grounded in shifts we’ve observed in users, markets, and technology.
Users are asking for faster, more personalized storytelling formats. Platforms like Webtoon and Kakao Entertainment have already proven the global appetite for serialized comics. We see opportunities in AI tools that generate storyboards, artwork, translations, and adaptive plotlines—helping creators launch global IP at unprecedented speed.
VTuber culture is booming (Hololive, Nijisanji), but production remains expensive and inaccessible. At the same time, AI voice synthesis and animation tools are reaching consumer grade. We want founders building platforms that let fans and creators launch AI-driven singers, performers, and groups—lowering barriers to entry and expanding what “idol culture” can mean.
Fans want more than static character interactions. Success stories like Project Sekai or Uma Musume show the power of emotionally sticky gameplay. AI now enables characters that remember your choices, grow emotionally, and offer companionship. We are looking for startups that transform fandom into living, evolving ecosystems.
Voice and music remain central to Japan’s cultural life—karaoke, radio drama, and music covers are mainstream. Spotify’s investment in AI DJ and recent user adoption of AI cover songs on TikTok highlight global shifts. We want founders reimagining karaoke, audio novels, or adaptive sound platforms that respond dynamically to mood and participation.
Josei manga, romance games, and lifestyle media already prove female audiences are underserved in tech. Recent success of apps like 恋するAIチャット (AI Romance Apps), 恋と深空(Love and DeepSpace) in Global shows clear user demand. We’re searching for startups building empathetic companions, josei-style stories, and emotionally intelligent services for women.
While much of robotics focuses on productivity and logistics, culture is still waiting for its “Gundam” moment. Tesla Optimus and Unitree show technical feasibility—but what about robots designed to inspire, entertain, and embody cultural icons? We want to see bold founders who make robots not just useful, but cool.
